The Burgess Mine, a gold mine, sits high atop the ridge of the Inyo Mountains at 9600′ just SE of New York Butte. I thought I had read about the Burgess in one of Roger Mitchell’s fantastic SUV Trails books when researching where to camp near the Salt Trams. The USGS Topo Map (see images) shoes multiple shafts, adits and structures. We found everything near the cabin collapsed but we did not venture far from the cabin or explore everything on the topo. Apparently there once was a 200′ incline, a couple shafts and a 700′ long crosscut adit.

The only structures are a cabin open to the elements and ruins of a stone structure. The cabin is open to the elements but has seen a few campers. We followed the ridge north to camp at a nice little site just below the New York Butte at 36.64145, -117.92321. One of my favorite places to camp for spectacular views.
