The Tarantula Mine can only be seen when Lake Don Pedro is at extremely low levels as it was when we visited in November 2014. Part of the Eagle-Shawmut operation, very little history is available on the web. A 1915 mining report stated that the mine operated a 100 HP hoist, 10 drill compressor driven by a 100 HP motor and a 20 stamp mill operated by a 75 HP motor. A sizable operation.

All that was visible from across the lake was the mill foundation and several tailings piles. Comment below if you know more!

My boyfriend lives at don pedro & normally you can see the lake from his house & at lake mcclure the entire piers for the old yosemite valley rr are all the way out of the water

  2. I own the property above this mine and down the the lake. Unfortunately, the entrance is completely filled in and the only evidence of an old mine are the tailings and some concrete and scrap steel. There are a few open mines up woods creek on private property that I have had the opportunity to explore.
