Highway 49, named after the famous miners of 1949 extends through the heart of Gold Country and the Mother Lode. It begins in Oakhurst and runs north ending in Vinton. While there is much history in the areas surrounding HWY 49 and the towns it meanders through there it is hard to pinpoint the history on the road itself. It is made up of and runs concurrent to highways 4, 88, 120, 132, 140 and more. Almost as if it were pieced together from other highways to highlight the Gold Country and the Mother Load.
