Location: Joshua Tree

Gold mining began in Joshua Tree in the 1870’s and peaked in the 1930’s. Most gold mining operations here were underground hard rock mines working large quartz veins for gold. Today there are over 700 gold mine tunnels within Joshua Tree National Park and hundreds more in eight districts just outside the park. Thousands of mills, mines, head-frames and shacks to explore.
