The Keane Wonder Mine (Death Valley) was discovered by Jack Keane in the early 1900’s along the Chloride Cliffs below Chloride City. In 1906 investors made the mine a major gold mine and one of the most productive in Death Valley. Gold mining was ceased when Hoover made Death Valley a National Monument.

The mill ruins still exist (pin location) in addition to a large tramway which runs up the side of the mountain to the mine which is at 36.681258, -116.901163. After being closed for several years the park service has finally re-opened the area. The 1 mile plus hike up the north side of the canyon to the mine is a popular moderate hike. The hike up the south side of the canyon is considerably more difficult. Further up the canyon is the Big Bell Mine and eventually Chloride City. Comment below if you have been!

    • Is it just the mill or is the mine open also. What about the Big Bell Mine further up the hill?

Everything is open. We went in late March; Big Bell Mine is as great as ever (for now)
